What is gout and how to treat it

More and more often we hear about people suffering from gout and about people who have gout attacks. Sometimes people do not even realize they have gout until they feel a lot of pain as some of the joints. Of course not all joint pains are a gout symptom, however if the joints from your big toe is aching and you can?t stand on the leg or walk, you are probably one of the few millions of people suffering from gout. Gout has been defined as one of the many forms of arthritis and it appears because of the high levels of uric acid.

There are several reasons why the levels of uric acid can increase and many of them are related to a person?s lifestyle and the eating and drinking habits. Gout can also appear because of certain medication that reduce the elimination of the uric acid as well as when a person?s body produces higher quantities of uric acid. When a person has too much uric acid in the body, it can turn into tiny uric acid crystals that usually form in the joints. When this happens, the affected joint will get swollen, stiff, very tender and very painful.

Studies show that gout can appear without any symptoms and inmost of the cases affects the joint of the big toe often times at night, during the rest period. As with any untreated disease, gout can become more severe even though the first symptoms can fade away in a few days. Some of the complications that can appear because of untreated gout are related to the urinary tract and the kidneys. It has been noticed that a lot of the persons that develop gout are obese and have relatives who suffer from gout. People who suffer from heart or kidney disease as well as people who have diabetes are also more inclined to develop gout. Gout also seems to appear at people who are not having a healthy diet and people who are consuming large quantities of alcohol.

There are several ways to treat gout and they can range from pain relievers to prescribed medication and creams and from herbal treatments to home remedies. Once a person?s diagnosis is gout, the treatment will consist of a combination of medications that will act to minimize the joint soreness and bringing the amount of uric acid from the body at normal levels. People with gout will also have to follow a special diet, lose weight if they are obese, keep away from alcohol and generally have a healthy life.

The medications prescribed for treating gout are Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs commonly known as NSAID drugs such as ibuprofenor other pain killers, corticosteroids as pills or injections, Colchicine as a pill or intravenously, Uricosurics and Xanthine oxidize inhibitors. Apart from these medicines that should always be prescribed by a physician, usually a rheumatologist, there are all kinds of herbal treatments and dietary supplements that one can try as well as numerous home remedies such as plant or fruit teas of cataplasms.
